Did you ever read Lord of the Flies, by Golding? I've been going through it page by page, and on top of being the most amazing poetry, it is about exactly that kind of misdirected and irrational fear. As Kholt would say, you need to rationally evaluate your risks. Americans aren't very good at that. Maybe no human beings are good at that.
