Well said.
And there's lots more, you could write a book, just by looking at legislation vs rhetoric.

Someone's doing some highly effective media and political management of these extremist views.

Michael Moore is a lifetime NRA member, but his new movie "Bowling in Columbine" shows other examples of small loud groups like NRA having greater extremist political influence than their numbers represent, tagging onto the right-wing agenda of the most prevalent media outlets.

When I was in national politics my activist NRA friends bragged about how, when they got a fax from HQ about pending legislation that needed to be attacked, they'd hit the phone banks with a well-oiled script, getting tens or hundreds of thousands of calls and letters to the legislators without hours. Amazing how they hijacked what was once simply a gun-safety organization back when I was in Boy Scouts.

Referring to the group so affectionately called the conservative base. They have to be near brain dead.

I interpret the above as a reference to the "conservative" posters on SI. What I generally see are left- and right-wing screamers posting on SI. Others appear to be more extreme. With all the screaming, "scream-backs," and plain meanness in the posts, I think you expect more from the posters than they can or are willing to offer.

Actually, this may be a useful place for everyone to blow off some steam. Somewhere, it has probably saved a poor dog from a kicking. At least, that is how I view it. Some of it even makes me smile.
