Abed, America and Americans are pretty wonderful, but we do a mean, schoolyard bully streak in us and some Presidents, instead of restraining it, vent it every now and then. After all, how can we convince folks to impoverish themselves on new weapons systems, many of very questionable value, unless we use them once in a while to prove that we still have the coolest toys in the universe.

We feel that after we stomp some weaker country into the ground and their economy gets better as our tin pot dictator receives our foreign aid, that we've done them a favor. Then we are shocked to find out that, in some circles, we are reviled. Some of it is jealousy at our relatively greater wealth and accomplishments in material and military matters. But some of it is well-deserved hate we should expect as return on our arrogance.

BTW, I am not saying that this justifies terrorist attacks on civilians. But, on the other hand, had my nation been stomped by the US over decades, I might turn to guerilla fighting. And, as unpolitically correct as this may sound, The World Trade Center Attack was awful. But the attack on The Pentagon and the proposed attack on The White House were the sorts of things we would have tried during The Revolution and did try during The Civil War.
