"Frankly, I don't think either of your assumptions are true." Then I don't know on what basis you interpret the life within and around. That "decent people would come to respect you for your integrity and courage, and for your willingness to take responsibility and to be accountable." seems a no-brainer to me--unless you define decency in some weird way. As to whether or not it would change you...such sincere action would seem to be primae facie evidence of that. So your objections seem contrived...
