The NYSE short positions just hit a new all-time high recently; the rise from the summer lows precedes the October rally:

New York Stock Exchange Issues Monthly Short Interest Report

NEW YORK, Oct. 21, 2002 - The New York Stock Exchange today reported short interest as of the close of business on the settlement date of October 15, 2002, reflecting transactions through October 9, 2002.

Based on information received from members and member organizations, short interest increased to a record 8,204,136,783 shares on October 15, 2002 from 7,994,772,795 shares on September 13, 2002.

The short interest on October 15, 2002 was equal to 2.3 percent of the total shares on the Exchange.

The short interest in warrants as of October 15, 2002 amounted to 128,120 warrants, compared with 130,387 warrants on September 13, 2002.

As of October 15, 2002, 3,546 stocks and 7 warrants were available for trading on the Exchange. Of these, 2,821 issues had either a short position of 5,000 shares or a change of shares since the last monthly report. A list of these issues, showing the Top 100 current short positions and average daily volume between the trade dates, covered by this report, is attached.

A short sale is any sale of a security, which the seller does not own, or any sale, which is completed by the delivery of a borrowed security.
