I agree it means nothing for other stocks in the long run. However, I disagree with your analysis of msft decision. The length of time it took the judge to reach a verdict had convinced most analysts that she would reject the settlement. That's why as soon as people heard that a decision was imminent, the stock started selling off. Then, at 3:28pm, the court employees put out the report by mistake on the web (to do some testing) and the market and msft started rallying.

The market always rallies on news that govt/judiciary is not being too harsh on any business. Just IMHO.
