Glad you were not close to the epicenter.............that quake was very large and scary.

I was very close to the epicenter of the Loma Prieta quake in 89.................about 30 miles as the crow flies. The destruction in some of the smaller towns was enormous. I kn ew people that crawled out of their leveled home and others who lost chimneys and a host of other things.

Every cupboard in my house was emptied onto the floor and every dresser upstairs was tipped over. My son was upstairs and he was knocked down in the stairway as he tried to get out. The walls were swaying so much they hit him in the arm and knocked him down. Thankfully he wasn't hurt. I had just backed out of our driveway and the first wave hit the muffler of the car I was driving.....the asphalt actually hit my car. The waves in the ground were rolling like the ground was the ocean.

When we all were out front and waiting for most of the large aftershocks to stop ( you never know if your quake is a fore-shock in which case we would have had to kiss it good bye). The liquifaction was very apparent..the ground was swaying under my feet.

My oldest son was playing water polo at the time of the quake. All the water in the pool rushed to one side and drained all the kids out onto the pool deck.

Afterwards, we all helped all the kids get together in our culdesac as some parents weren't home from work yet. THen we took turns watching and feeding them while the other adults cleaned up the messes in their homes.

We were tall terrified for a few hours but did what we had to do.................sleeping was not easy that night.
