It will be the downfall of the US as a force if Saddam will not be ousted.

The Saudis are against the removal of Saddam because they are the main target....... and the biggest trouble makers financing terrorist organization. All the Saudi Clan must be neutralized and eliminated. Having them around is like having the Mafia running this country.

The Saudis are against the toppling of Saddam since their regime will be marginalized. The US is scared that their monarchy will fall, and for this, the Saudis enjoy some leverage.

<<I bet the average English citizen is against [invasion of Iraq] as well>>

Yes, overwhelmingly against unilateral invasion, i.e. without an explicit UN mandate. I was in England in August and September, and Blair is completely unrepresentative of popular opinion in the UK.

A recent UK newspaper poll asked who was the greatest danger to world peace, and Bush got more votes than Hussein.

Mish this is one the issues in which i give no opinion.
I deal only in what i think will or will not happen, period.
Nothing more.
So this is how i see it at this moment.Bush is campaigning hard on the Iraq issue.
If the Republicans carry the day on Election day, Iraq will happen; if Republicans get hurt Election day, Iraq is back to an intense debate and it is a 50/50 chance of happening at best.
I have no idea what is going to happen on election day.
