Russia pressures US to put Chechens on terror blacklist.

MOSCOW - Moscow yesterday stepped up pressure on the United States to add Chechen rebel groups to its terrorist blacklist, describing the issue as a test of the international coalition against terrorism.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Yakovenko welcomed Thursday's announcement by Washington that it was considering Moscow's request to include 'certain Chechen groups' on its list of terrorist organisations.

Such a move "would signify not only the strengthening of the Russo-American partnership but would also be proof of the effectiveness of the international coalition against terrorism," Mr Yakovenko said.

The notion of an international battle against terrorist groups and 'rogue states' has been invoked by Washington in its bid to persuade other permanent UN Security Council members - particularly Russia - to back military intervention in Iraq.

Inclusion on Washington's list of terrorist organisations would bring an immediate end to Chechen groups' overt political activities on American soil, as well as freezing their US-held assets and preventing members from travelling to the country. Russia made its request to Washington before last week's hostage drama in which at least 119 people were killed after being held in theatre by armed rebels. - AFP
