Well...i disagree with your comment...and here's why...

I am not an expert on the interpretation of literature, but personally prefer the simplest explanation that fits the facts. "The moving finger . . ." passage seems to me to be a very well written way to say get on with your life, what's past is past, don't cry over spilled milk.

Bringing in alternate interpretations, unless they add to our understanding, to me at least, is allowing the reader to change the work to what he wants it to be, rather than what it is. I suppose this Occam's razor approach to poetry is not exactly standard practice, and shows my bias, but I think it is useful, and neutral, which I see as a big plus.

While I subscribe to the idea that we all bring different perspectives to literature and poetry, and that that is a good thing, I don't think it should go so far as to change the meaning of what was said, just its relevance to us.
