I believe the reason WDC popped up this morning was a favorable write up in the November 4, 2002 issue of Barrons Weekly. Near the end of "The Trader" column on page MW7, the disk drive industry was discussed. The subject of the write up reminded me of the generous soul that posted the weekly price of disk drives over the past few years. But with a major difference, the prices of disk drives have stopped falling and are now steady. As a consequence, the few remaining disk drive companies have returned to profitability. WDC was singled out as profitable while Seagate and Maxtor were mentioned as the other companies in the "oligapoly" of disk drive producers that have survived the disk drive shakeout. The article mentioned Seagate's going private and how the private owners may take it public in the future--where have I heard that one before? The tone of the article was that over the past 20 years the disk drive industry has gone from the penthouse the the outhouse and has now settled into an environment where only the strongest companies have survived. The survivors are scarred but currently have margins of 5% which is not bad in today's stock market. I encourage everyone to read the article.
