Regarding this and recessions, I made a post to the MITA thread over the weekend. Basically if you go back and look at what the market was doing right before the 1990 recession became self-evident and Iraq invaded Kuwait, it had done a 3 month 15% runup. Right as the recession got into gear it then did a huge 2 month cliff dive.

I don't believe news has anything to do with this. If half of the US had fallen into the ocean the market would have still gone up today, IMO. <G>.

The peak seems to have coincided with the poor factory orders data. Also, the Challenger layoff report came out. Not sure when it was published but I saw it at about the same time. Job cuts up 150% from last month at about 7600 per day. Highest for 9 mths. Double dip.....
