All of this tells us nothing about what the right policy was..... The facts and failures of Vietnam tells the average person a lot, regardless of political party line. You must still believe in the "Domino Theory"? If the Domino Theory had any validity, why did the USSR fall apart instead of gaining strength as it colonialized new countries... One of many fatal flaws in the DOD-sponsored sophistry declaring the need for armed US intervention around the world. History and common sense says that is a failing prospect. There's always a theory to support such hubristic ideas, usually advanced by chickenhawks that never served, and never intend to, but gain personally and politically from such notions. Those theories are rammed down America's throat by classifying the facts and outright lies, until a Daniel Ellsburg publishes the facts (albeit after waiting 6 years). This time the theory is "war on terrorism", with classified links, hidden presidential documents, and "trust me" attitude to connect incidents to the theory de jour. What bothers me is the absolute mandate on secrecy, declaring everything to be of military necessity. A good plan if you want to control the media and politics and do away with democracy. What happens when there's another Daniel Ellsberg who publishes the cynical manipulation of terrorism for political gain?
