Announces Recalls
Of Its Focus Brand Cars

A WALL STREET JOURNAL ONLINE NEWS ROUNDUP

DEARBORN, Mich. -- Ford Motor Co. on Monday said it is voluntarily recalling 572,795 Focus vehicles from the 2000-2001 model years because of potential safety problems, including a fire in the engine.

One recall involves a bolt in the front-suspension assembly that may be loose and cause noise, vibration or, in a small number of cases, separation of the ball joint, the auto maker said.

The other recall involves Focus vehicles with Zetec engines in which potential problems with battery-cable routing could result in smoke, wire melting or a fire under the hood.

Ford, the No. 2 U.S. auto maker behind General Motors Corp., said it will notify customers through the mail to bring their vehicles to a Ford or Lincoln Mercury dealer for no-cost repairs.

A Ford spokesman said there were 36 claims potentially related to the front-suspension assembly. There were 334 reports of some kind of battery-check engine light or heat-related damage potentially related to the Zetec engines.

It hasn't been determined if the two issues are related, the spokesman said, adding that there have been no reports of injuries or accidents.

For the front suspension problem, technicians will inspect the lower control arm hardware and tighten, or replace, the affected bolt as necessary. The battery-cable repair involves inspecting and re-routing cables and replacing cables if necessary.

"We are serious about improving not just the quality of the new Focus, but also the reliability of Focus cars from prior model years," Sue Cischke, Ford's vice president for environmental and safety engineering, said in a prepared statement. "Although these two concerns are rare occurrences, they could have safety consequences and we want to ensure our customers' peace of mind."

Thanks for the castle. Best part is that I don't see a mailbox and will therefore not be getting any of those pesky credit card offers (or bills..). In case the lack of a mailbox doesn't stop them, I suspect there is a pretty good moat surrounding this place. I'll just have to train some good carrier pigeons to send out SI posts every now and then.
