American satellite photographs have confirmed the expansion of the colonies. What is there to deny? Are you really going to argue about the definition of "natural growth" and how that has poisoned the spirit of the Oslo Accord?

The religious-Zionist settlers are trying to expand and the current government neither really permits nor denies this.

It strikes me that any expansion of the settlements is the cost of the Palestinian violence. The settlements seems to exist for either of two purposes, to provide additional security in strategic areas (defense and control lines) or for providing buffer regions around Jerusalem for the purpose of futher consolidating Israeli control of the capital (which lies directly next to the West Bank)...

And of course, Sharon has to pander to those orthodox and Zionist groups which argue (under current circumstances) that the only way to preserve Israeli security is to place more Jews in the west bank since there is obviously nothing to be gained (security wise) by not doing so. And besides, they are a political faction that would love to see the Palestinians completely evicted from Judea and Samaria. So Sharon has to pander to their political interests since he has few arguments against permitting their settlment activities. They just make the settlements by land-grabbing. And the only way to stop if is to have the IDF evict them.. And that isn't going to happen under the current political situation.
