Do they have a car driving beside it, or as in "Blackhawk Down" put a big X on top of the car?

Republican Harris Wins Florida Congress Race
By Robert Green

SARASOTA, Fla. (Reuters) - Florida Republican Katherine Harris, who gained national notoriety during the disputed 2000 U.S. presidential election, easily won her race for Congress on Tuesday in a smooth election unmarred by balloting problems.

Harris, 45, won the 13th Congressional District seat in the U.S. House of Representatives for Florida's southwest coast, defeating Democrat Jan Schneider by 55 percent to 45 percent, state election tallies showed.

"This is really an amazing night," said Harris, who succeeds retiring Republican incumbent Dan Miller. "I'm deeply humbled and honored. Thanks to everyone who believed in me," she told cheering supporters.

Harris said her top priorities would be improving education and protecting the environment, and promised to fight to prevent oil drilling off Florida's coast.

As Florida secretary of state in 2000, Harris was vilified by Democrats and likened to puppy-snatching cartoon villainess Cruella De Vil when she certified George W. Bush the winner over Al Gore (news - web sites) in the state by 537 votes, after the presidential election became mired in legal battles over disputed ballots.

Her action gave Bush the Electoral College (news - web sites) votes he needed to become president, making her a heroine for Republicans.

Democrats said Harris should have stepped aside because she was a co-chair of Bush's Florida campaign committee, but she refused, saying she impartially followed Florida election law.

The Florida Supreme Court (news - web sites) blocked Harris' certification and ordered recounts to continue, but the U.S. Supreme Court (news - web sites) eventually halted the recounts, making Bush the winner. <?B>

Harris received death threats during the controversy, and her clothing and make-up were also the butt of jokes on late-night television shows.

She was a strong favorite in the congressional race. Her district has a Republican majority and she had an advantage of more than 10-to-1 over Schneider in campaign funds.

Schneider, 55, was a lawyer in Washington for 25 years before moving to Sarasota three years ago. She was a classmate of Bill and Hillary Clinton (news - web sites) at Yale Law School and campaigned for President Clinton (news - web sites).

Harris' victory will likely raise speculation she could now contemplate races for the U.S. Senate or governor.
