Lenin indulged a partial season of capitalism through the NEP. It mattered not, but was followed by Stalin. Even now, China is a least looking at the possibility of regional hegemony. There is no reason to suppose that an ambitious dictatorship could not exist with partial marketization. Even the ideologues can rationalize it, as they rationalized Stalin's creation of privileges for the nomenklatura, or introduction of incentive bonuses in industry, as representing a necessary phase of "market socialism".
