I very much agree with you on that. The people do choose what is in the best self interest of the group overall...but only if they choose. I used to play the horses a lot back in the seventies. I read a lot of books and was pretty smart; but in the end, the public always chose the odds better than I did: the favourite came in the proper percentage,; the longshot came in the proper percentage. Democracy ensures the self interest of the species...but only if you buy a ticket. Of course...not everyone is interested in the species...
