Calif. Shocker: Simon Leads Davis in Early Returns

In numbers that could foreshadow the most stunning election upset of the night, Republican gubernatorial challenger Bill Simon is leading incumbent Democratic Gov. Gray Davis in early returns.

With 21 percent of the vote tallied, Simon holds a slim 2 point lead over Davis, 47 to 45 percent, reports WABC Radio Network newsman Bob Schmidt.

Political experts have insisted for weeks that Simon had run such a poor campaign that he had no chance for victory. But every survey in the race showed that Davis was never able to reach 50 percent support, with up to 25 percent of the electorate still undecided by Election Day.

A Simon upset would further compound the debacle for Democrats in Washington, who have apparently lost control of the U.S. Senate and lost seats in the House
