Perhaps the "continuous campaign" doctrine is finally dead. Adopted by the Democrats in the frustration of the Dukakis disaster of 1988, it has destroyed every effort by idealistic Congressmen to govern between elections.

This has driven people out of politics who are capable of doing anything else instead, has led to all media stories about court cases to lead with whether the judge is "Republican appointed" or "Democrat appointed", and culminated in the likes of Tom Daschle an Frank Leahy shutting down the Senate, rather than recognize that their opposition holds a share of power.

It will be interesting to see how easily the Democrat party can finally shuck off the America-hating Marxist/Leninist left that has controlled them since the late Vietnam era. Don't underestimate that party's ability to survive: They are 200 years old. I expect the former "New Left" of the 60's is about to become the true Big Loser of the 2002 elections...
