A national sales tax would have the effect of double-taxing the sales-taxable expenditures of preexisting non-IRA savings that were net of income taxes. Ditto for any sales-taxable expenditures made with the proceeds from sales of assets accumulated with after-income-tax earnings prior to the sales tax taking effect. I've never seen this issue effectively addressed, including by the Fair Tax organization and Congressmen who have pushed the national sales tax.
