Since the main business of the DC area is government, I can see why your view there may be different from that of the country at large.

There is seldom a recession in government. Governments seldom lay off thousands of workers at a time. That leads, perhaps, to a somewhat distorted view of the way the world works outside the beltway.

Boeing is still the main employer in the Seattle area, though not as dominant as it used to be with Microsoft and other high tech companies now in the mix. But Boeing has laid off tens of thousands of workers in the past year. And we know what has happened to a lot of the high tech companies that flourished here just two years ago. And a lot of Microsoft millionaires are no longer millionaires, and realize that wealth and riches are not guaranteed.

The economic mood here is, I think, quite different from yours.
