As I recall, at least one of the cholesterol lowering drugs has in fact been demonstrated to lower risk of subsequent heart attacks. It probably does that by forcing the liver to convert more LDL to HDL. High doses of niacin (which I also take) does the same thing. High doses of niacin also increase the risk of liver cancer and cirrhosis. OTOH, if you're looking at a serious risk of a heart attack within a few years that most likely will kill you, that can be an acceptable risk. If you have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, asthma, and other diseases too numerous to list, the problem may be your breathing. You may be overbreathing or hyperventilating 24/7. Roughly, 6 years ago I came down with severe asthma.......prior to that, I had been very active.....ran a couple of miles per day, played racquetball etc. I was put on all these inhalers and singulair which made things somewhat tolerable most times but not so tolerable other times. I could barely workout. I was depressed a great deal of the time. About a year and 1/2 ago, I saw something on the net that said breathing patterns were responsible for asthma. I checked it out.......it turns out a Russian scientist/engineer/MD, Buteyko, had been studying human breathing since the 50's and 60's, and determined that when we took in too much O2 and our body's CO2 levels fell below normal levels, certain diseases ensued. For most of the 20th century, the Russians had studied the effects of pure O2 on dogs......they would run dogs on treadmills feeding them pure O2, and the dogs would be dead within an hour. Briefly, what Buteyko determined is that the lowered CO2 caused several responses in the human body.....the body's acidity increased, providing a better breeding ground for disease and damping the body's immune system; our metabolic rates were slowed, causing weight gains; the body's normally natural fight-or-flight syndrome was activated causing surges of adrenalin and other physiological and psychological reactions; and our rate of breathing increased [the body's CO2 level tells the brain when to breathe]. As our immune systems are compromised by the increased O2 intake, all kinds of disease develop including allergies. The body's reaction to the higher influx of O2 is to try to counterbalance the effect by slowing the breathing thru the introduction of asthma, sinitus, sinus blockages, encouraging sedentary behavior, rhinitis, etc. Separately, American scientists have determined that when adrenalin is released into our body's systems, the unused portion does not return to its source but rather is converted to fat and desposited on the thighs of women, and the stomachs of men. The fattening of those areas is one of the classic signs of overbreathing. Since doing the buteyko breathing method, I have reduced my asthma symptoms dramatically and reduced my use of inhalers by 70%. Before Buteyko, I would get bronchitis every 3 mos; since buteyko [1 1/2 years] I have had it once. Before Buteyko, a bout of bronchitis would lay me up for a month; since Buteyko I was back to the gym within 4 days. Before buteyko, my workout was good for maybe 1/2 hour to 1 hour; since buteyko, I can do two hours easily. My weight which had always been on the average to the light side had ballooned by 40 lbs. Since buteyko, my weight is back to normal. Improved eyesight was another side benefit. There are three components to the buteyko method: breathing thru your nose 24/7; doing the breathing exercises 2-3 times per day; practicing reduced breathing 24/7. To date, I have done the first two regularly, and just this week started on the third one, hoping to be totally free of asthmatic symptoms and no longer requiring at least my reliever inhaler when I am finished. The four diseases/physical and mental conditions reaching epidemic proportions in this country, particularly among kids, is obesity, depression, asthma, and diabetes. According to Buteyko, all four are connected to overbreathing.
