I've got mixed feelings about popups, mostly from "strongly dislike" to "loathe entirely". We had them briefly but made them go bye-bye real quickly. I'm toying with the idea, though, of doing something like showing a popup if something like 1000 banners have gone by without a click. Dunno. The community will likely decide that one. Convincing me not to do pops at all is a comparatively easy sell.

Yesterday I implemented something kind of on the other end of the same spectrum. Certain ads (one of which is identified but only shows up randomly about 1 in 1000 views; another of which I haven't identified), when clicked, completely shut off banner ads for 50 to 100 page views.

I think a likely outcome of the pop ad issue is that eventually they'll become so universally despised that advertisers who use them will find that they lose more marketshare than they gain by using them. Personally, when I see a pop, I make a mental note never to buy that product. I'm sure that if people aren't doing the same now, they sure will be eventually, in droves, either consciously or subconsciously.

But pops won't go away while they're proving to be an effective advertising tool. And they are. Advertisers pay some really hefty rates for them, and they wouldn't if it weren't for them (currently) being effective.
