Actually, in about '90/'91, a fine book called "The Great Reckoning" discussed this subject in depth and predicted the death of the Democrat party. Of course, they failed to take into account that a Democrat president who was a good enough liar could be elected for two consequetive terms first.

I disagree about Bush, though. I believe people support him because he is so far above the politics of the last 10 years, and even back into the Reagan administration. People have been wanting a plain-ole person as president (this was the underpinning for the Perot movement)...
