One problem, I think, is that the way many schools "teach" students the value of democracy is through student body elections. But those are almost entirely popularity contests. There is seldom any content, any meaningful platform (how can there be when students aren't allowed any meaningful role in governing the institution?), or any substance to the job. Yet most schools run these as though they were real elections.

Even worse, some schools vote for prom queen, homecoming king and queen, etc. Again, pure popularity contests, based on what they look like, not how they think.

So up until a person is 18 this is the totality of their experience in elections, and then we plunge them into the national electoral process and expect them to think that a vote is a valuable thing, that the democratic process is a solemn civic responsibility?

Children learn by example. Every example they have been given is that elections are populatity contests with meaningless outcomes.
