In any event, the residential real estate market simply isn't as volatile as the securities markets so the investment is probably as sound an investment as anyone can make.

In general true, but not always. Look at Japan in the early 90s, or my area (Beach Cities of LA) in the same timeframe --- greater than 40% drop. And right now the valuation of homes is substantially greater than it has been in decades in the US. The problem is that many people are thinking that way - real estate or bonds equals safe. That is a sure path to making it highly unsafe.
