Oh zonder, we have seen this movie so many times. The Palestinians (at least, those with the guns) are not thinking about negotiations, they are thinking about victory.

Many people find that hard to believe because usually the weaker party doesn't decide to attack a stronger party instead of negotiate. But the Pals figure they've got the Israelis sufficiently hamstrung politically to prevent a real clobbering; meanwhile, they've got the "great Arab nation" at their back and the cavalry will surely ride over the hill one of these years. Many, many Palestinians know this approach is insane but they are unable to change the course of events while Arafat -- Mr. Walking Palestinian Flag -- is alive. Now, if only the Europeans could figure it out.
