New Wachovia report more ominous:

11:57 ET Altera, Xilinx sell off following Cisco report : ALTR and XLNX are conspicuously weak today even as the SOX gets hammered (-6.8%); Wachovia said in a pre-open note that they see a sluggish outlook for comm IC/PLD suppliers ALTR, BRCM, MRVL, and XLNX given CSCO's cautious Q2 rev outlook coupled with the increase in raw material inventory; moreover, firm says CSCO highlighted its intention to replace PLDs with ASICs in order to further reduce its component cost base, which would adversely impact ALTR and XLNX since they supply about 50% of the PLDs into CSCO. Xilinx (XLNX: news, chart, profile) fell more than 14 percent after A.G. Edwards lowered its rating on shares of the San Jose, Calif., programmable logic circuit technology firm to "hold" from "buy" due to valuation. Volume is a whopping 13.3 million, above the issue's daily average of 11.4 million. The firm cited the recent run-up in the shares off a 52-week low of $13.50 on Oct. 9. "We have not seen any change in the competitive landscape, pricing environment, or in end-user demand to warrant any particular change to our earnings forecast," the firm said in a research note to clients.
