Part of it is diet. Part of it is a difference between how the dollars are spent. Do you mass spend the medical dollars to try and prevent medical problems across the nation or do you buy an hugely expensive machine that will give a few extremely sick people a new lease on life?

For example, the US ranks low (last?) when it comes to infant mortality in developed nations. The US is hands down the place you want be if you end up having complications during child birth, but other countries have good cheap or free pre-natal care available to all. The end result being we save babies that would not be saved in other countries, but other babies die from simple easily treated problems that go undetected until it is too late because the mothers can not afford pre-natal care.

It is just the realities of living with a capitalistic medical system. If you are really sick and have the money it is the best place to be, otherwise...
