that must mean Vietnam was "self defense".

That was the misguided view of Eisenhower, JFK, LBJ and even Nixon. Altho' according to his advisors McNamara and Sorensen JFK saw it was doomed to failure and intended to withdraw after the election.

BTW, McNamara spoke last week, recalling that it was a horrendous time. In his 7 years as SecDef every day there was some Soviet maneuver or threat to consider. Were anyone else in the oval office in his view we would have invaded Cuba. What was discovered 22 later to his shock was that unbeknownst to anyone in the US government, Soviet generals in Cuba had theater nukes already, with standing orders to use them. Had the US invaded "there is no question they would have used them against US troops". The chain of events is inescapable. The US could not have allowed that nuclear attack go unanswered, even on foreign soil, and would have responded with nukes on Cuba, destroying Soviet emplacements. Moscow would have had no option but to respond against the US, and it would have hit the fan.

Good thing we don't have the level of M.A.D. threat as we did then. Imagine what this administration would have done?
