I am not sure if that is the right way to look at it.

Think of all this as recommendations. For example, they are told not to lie on their left side because "left is bad" or something, but apparently this advice had to do with heart & stomach being on the left side. They are told not to eat pork because "it is filthy" but apparently this had to do with pork going bad very quickly in desert heat. They are told not to touch the genitals except with left hand because "left is bad" but probably it had to do with the fact that they ate with their hands (right hand, mostly) and were not very clean to start with.

My understanding from Muslims' behaviour re these things is that they are "recommendations" - i.e. failure to follow them is not a sin. So, to answer your question, if a Muslim loses his left hand I guess he would not have to hire someone else to clean his genitals but would just use his right hand.

Can we now think happy thoughts? All this talk of genital cleanliness & hair plucking is beginning to get to me :)
