"Gold Fields have hauled out all the gold they've got in the kitty. They've sold off more gold that they've produced. The rand is stronger and yields are down at their two best mines (Beatrix and Driefontein), which doesn't bode well for the next quarter," said Leon Esterhuizen, an analyst at Investec in Johannesburg.

Attributable gold production fell 3% to 1.13 million ounces from 1.16 million ounces in the fourth quarter, due mainly to a 7% fall in production at Gold Fields' flagship mine at Driefontein to 330,000 ounces. Meanwhile, at its Beatrix operation, production fell 9% to 157,000 ounces from 172,000 ounces. On a yearly basis, production was up 28%.
