Remember the phrase "constant vigilance". All that's needed for a dictatorship to emerge is to let government officials have their way unexamined and unaudited, which is the way this administration (and you among others) intends to keep it.

What you may be missing in thinking about our advanced democracy, the oldest and wealthiest in the world, are the facts of decreasing freedoms, increasing government authority over our lives, greater military belligerance towards the world, and consequent greater world hostility to America.

The excuse of "they just hate us because we're rich and free" is phony on its face. Envy there is, but envy doesn't drive suicide bombers. Warlords can't recruit on envy, but have been proven to recruit for protecting their holy territory and to fight others in their blood feuds. This was discovered in the late 70s when the CIA gave support to learn more efficient ways of terrorism. The first suicide bombers and airline hijackings appeared in 1982, coincidentally.

It was interesting to recently hear a 22-yr old middle-class computer science student in a Middle East city declare his opinion that OBL was "great", and at the same time when asked what he'd like to do after graduation -- "go to America and be a computer consultant". These kids are taught that terrorism is just another technique, like "freedom fighting", honorable if against an enemy invading their territory. This kid doesn't hate the US, his "envy" is directed at coming to the US.

The endless attempts to change our laws to eliminate accountability by the Bush administration and suit the Ashcroft agenda and Bush profiteering may be just the tip of the iceberg.

If that's true, then we are on a downward slope from democracy into something else.

The infection of billions of dollars in unaccountable spook activity and shadow government is being kept hidden from we people that actually pay the money and lives, and that power is what drives these jokers.

You say it isn't in the Constitution that the government has to make information on its actons available to the citizenry... In the Information Age that is the primary power of government, information. To conceal and deceive is to thwart representation, defraud the public and undermine rule of law. Essentially, the US is spiraling into an insider's kleptocracy - "take what you can get and keep anyone from finding out".

RE "Vietname as self-defense" -- as stated earlier, that was the claim, bogus as it has turned out to be. And it has also turned out that the promoters knew their claims were lies.
