I wonder what FAL Demolibs would do if Arab and Muslim were substituted for Republican and Capitalist. Racial vilification & Australias Arab and Muslim communities: What we can do The Australian Arabic Council (AAC) has for many years maintained a national racism register where we record all incidents reported to us of racial vilification in the media and in the community. We then take action where possible. We urge all Arabic Australians to be vigilant in this time of war rhetoric, racial vilification and possible generalisations and stereotypes about people of Arabic background, despite repeated and very public condemnation of the September 11 terror attacks by Arab and Islamic associations around Australia. The AAC is currently receiving many queries about what the community can do with regards to any possible increase in vilification in the next few weeks, and this fact sheet is a response to those queries. Vilification in the media One way is to monitor your local media, and forward any material, articles, transcripts or details about incidents of stereotyping, vilification or scapegoating of Australia's Arabic community to the AAC. We will then take action where possible, and distribute the information to our "Action Alert" list so that all of our associates are aware of the issue. Contact the AAC for a media incident form that you can fill out and return to the AAC head office. Please note that all personal details will be kept confidential. Vilification in the community As above, you can contact the AAC and report the community incident on the phone or thrugh our Racism Register incident form. We are also aware other organisations have also started keeping a record of vilification reports and support these initiatives. We encourage people to contact their local organisations. At a more practical level there are a number of steps we recommend members of the community take if they are concerned or are the recipients of any attacks or abuse: Contact your local police station and makes sure that they are aware of your local organisation, school, centre or religious places present in the neighbourhood. Contact your school if you are parent and request that school take extra care in the classroom and schoolyard to prevent any bullying, racial abuse or intimidation of your children; Contact your local council and parliamentary member and ask them to ensure they be vigilant in local libraries, community centres and vocal in the local press on maintaining tolerance and community solidarity; Be vigilant and attentive in your community, around our schools, places of worship and community centres. If you see or encounter anything or anybody suspicious contact the police on 000 immediately. 1. Threatening incidents It is most important that if you feel that your or your firends or family are threatened by vilification that you contact the police. 2. Unwanted phone calls If you receive unwanted or threatening phone calls at home or your workplace, report them to Telstra on 1 800 805 996, or go to telstra.com.au . Please ensure that you keep records of unwanted or abusive phone calls with details such as the time of the call, the details of the speaker and any familiarity they express with your location or personal circumstances. These details will all be required by Telstra in order to investigate the calls. 3. Racial vilification You can contact the following organisations for more information or to make a complaint. The Australian Arabic Council can provide you with contacts and advice on the racial vilification laws in your state. We can also record all incidents on our national Racism Register.
