hueyone <I suggested that it was far too early to brand the administration's policy vis a vis Iraq a failure and suggested we see how this chess game plays out. It now seems that the administration has accomplished one of the very things that you were most critical about them for not achieving, that is international cooperation via the United Nations.>

It is my turn to say to you "lets see how this thing plays out". The yes vote was based on assurances by Washington that this Resolution was not a pretext for an invasion -- and there is no trigger for an invasion. A decision for UN action would still have to be taken by the UN. The Us did not win this round - this was and is the French position, ie. a two stage approach. The US is NOT free to invade Iraq under the UN banner without a second UN decision. It was smart of Bush to get a UN Resolution -- and he comprised a lot to get it. Only a small percentage of Americans favor a move against Iraq without the UN. Bush needed this Resolution badly and did what was necessary to get it. But he did not get what he wanted originally which was a green light to invade or at least an automatic trigger.

As for your question about Bush Sr. -- Bush Sr. had the experience to run his own show. Bush Jr. let Cheney run with the issue and then had to spend months undoing the damage Cheney did by spouting his "regime change" policy. Bush Sr. would not have let this happen IMO.

As fr being critical -- the whle world was critical and for good reason. Cheney's moves were incompetent - now lets see what happens when we press the UN for a green light to invade -- we have not got that yet.
