SEC chief accountant Herdman resigns By Rex Nutting
The Securities and Exchange Commission's top accountant, Robert Herdman, resigned Friday in the wake of the scandal over the selection of William Webster to head up a new independent accounting oversight body. SEC Chairman Harvey Pitt resigned Tuesday, but will remain on board until a replacement is named. Herdman and Pitt were apparently the only two SEC officials to know of Webster's ties to a company under fire for questionable accounting practices. At least four investigations into the selection process are underway. "Investors have lost a great advocate," Pitt said in accepting Herdman's resignation.
