let me clarify my opinion on Newmont (NEM)
I believe among the investment-worthy pack of unhedged gold miners, that NEM is the worst
kind of like IBM in the mid-1990's
a good investment if you are satisfied with 20-30% gains
as opposed to the more nimble smallers with 50-80% gains

Weiss likes NEM for different reasons (just guessing)
he usually goes for the least indebted
he is all about studying debt implications leading to death
NEM is big big big
and they must deal with a moderate but reducing hedgebook
Weiss is not a stock picker at all
he has a totally different approach, highlighting areas to avoid

lots of people like NEM, let them
I believe Newmont will fight large battles against Wall Street's political armies
we need them to lead interference
they will cut a path, like a big 250-lb man carrying armor and toting a flag
but the best investments will be the lightning fast sprinters behind the armored leader

if I had to list 25 gold miner stocks in order
all of which I do recommend
NEM would be last

neither PlacerDome nor Barrick would do on such a lis

as for JPM dunno when the Battan Death March occurs
but the stock has shot its wad from the October run
now they are soon to suffer a thousand cuts by the lilliputians and deadly ghost of words

it has begun, with rumors of $17-70B in gold hedgebook
with rumors of fraud charges
I find it curious that the gold book losses are of the same magnitude as the WCom-Arg-Russia fraudulent evasion from nonperform booking
these guys are soon to get hit from 3-4 sides simultaneously
each attack will be lethal
