U.S. Shuts Embassy Amid African Turmoil
By REUTERS

ASHINGTON, Oct. 31 — The United States decided today to withdraw American diplomats and close its embassy in the Central African Republic, where government forces have fought rebels since Friday.

Because of conditions in the capital, Bangui, the State Department also advised Americans to leave "as the security situation permits."

"The situation in Bangui remains fluid and uncertain. Fighting has occurred between rebel elements and government forces. Looting has been reported, including intrusions into private homes. Telephone communications are unreliable. The international airport in Bangui is currently closed," it said in a travel warning.

American government personnel will leave the country and the embassy in Bangui will suspend operations, the State Department added.

The government in Bangui said today that its Libyan-backed forces were hunting down the rebels after driving them from the capital.

Rebels loyal to a former army chief attacked the city on Friday in an attempt to unseat President Ange-Félix Patassé. The government said the insurgents were helped by neighboring Chad.
