Those carriers that adopted GSM1x would be isolated from lucrative roaming contracts with other GSM carriers, Prohm said.

I remember a statement some months ago to this effect. However, what if it isn't an Asian GSM carrier, but VOD (the analyst meeting is in London!)? Doesn't VOD have new spectrum in other Euro countries and around the world? Wouldn't they be less vulnerable to this threat?

And what's to stop other GSM carriers from going the GSM/1X route on new spectrum?
