Son admits use of phone-y ID to get sex calls charged to dad

Saturday, November 9, 2002

A Southbridge man accused of stealing his father's identity to charge more than $5,400 worth of phone-sex calls turned himself into state police with a startling confession.

``He said he was a sex addict,'' trooper Jeff LeBlanc said yesterday.

Because of Sven A. Martin's honesty, prosecutors agreed to summon him to court later this month to face larceny and fraud charges rather than arresting him immediately.

The 34-year-old man's father in Cookson, Okla., Dennis Martin, called police after receiving a bill from a collection agency for $5,456.

``He called here and the investigation commenced. He suspected who it was,'' LeBlanc said.

On Oct. 20, Martin walked into the state police barracks in Brookfield after police phoned him. He admitted he used his father's Social Security number to obtain a phone card from Verizon and called phone-sex lines listed in magazines.

The calls went to companies based in several countries including Jamaica and the island of Vanuatu near New Zealand.

Martin paid the first few phone bills but moved and lost track of his bills, according to a police report.

He promised to pay the outstanding bill but his father is pressing charges, according to LeBlanc. ``Dad wasn't happy with that bill,'' the trooper said.
