At the moment it may be a rampant practise amongst Shi'ite but amongst Wahabis and orthodox Sunnis it is not a prevalent practise.

Interesting... Obviously there is a tradition of lying in any society.. That's just the nature of mankind, along with stealing, hating, coveting, etc... But I don't know of any other religion except Islam, in this case Shiism, where it was permissable to lie...

But it strikes me that there is far less reluctance to lie to westerners than you peceive (having experienced it myself).. But I will defer to your expertise...

Btw, do you know the Koranic reference about where a muslim who seeks non-muslim allies for the purpose of defeating another muslim, is under an obligation to then destroy that non-muslim ally??

New developments clear way for PML-QA govt

* MQM tilt, PPPP forward bloc set to make requisite number
* PPPP in Catch-22 to avoid split

By Sarfaraz Ahmed

KARACHI: Two important new developments — one related to the MQM and the other to the PPPP, where a ‘forward bloc’ could be on the cards — have brightened the prospects of a PML-QA-led government at the centre, well-placed official sources told Daily Times on Saturday.

While the PML-QA and its allies face no problem in forming their government in Punjab, they will also be able to form government in Sindh with the MQM’s tilting in their favour after President Pervez Musharraf accepted the MQM’s cardinal demand to open the ‘no-go’ areas in Karachi to the party’s activists. Secondly, the government’s permission to move Asif Ali Zardari, spouse of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto, to a hospital in a posh area in Karachi is also advantageous to the PML-QA, sources said.

According to these sources, Faisal Saleh Hayat, PPP MNA from Jhang, and party veteran Aitzaz Ahsan will lead a forward bloc of certain PPP MNAs from Punjab to enable the PML-QA government attain a majority at the centre. They said this development had given renewed hope to the PML-QA to form its government at the centre. Although Faisal and Aitzaz have been consistently denying reports of a forward bloc in the PPPP, they are reported to have shown serious opposition to the way the party is being run.

The two have raised objections to the constant interference of party chairperson, Benazir Bhutto, which they claim disregard the ground realities in Pakistan.

They have objected to the inability of PPPP President Makhdoom Amin Fahim to take decisions on his own, although he has been “formally” authorised to do so by Ms Bhutto.

Official sources said the situation will crystallize soon, and the scenario they foresee is a government by the PML-QA, in alliance with the National Alliance, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement, PPP (Sherpao), and an unspecified number of MNAs elected on the PPPP tickets.

Sources say if the PPPP realizes the magnitude of the crisis it is facing, it will have to re-evaluate and redesign the party strategy and join the PML-QA government to avoid a split. If the PPPP does that, it would have to show a great deal of flexibility on the Legal Framework Order (LFO) and the National Security Council, they said. The PML-QA and its allies, almost all of whom are pro-government, would not like to see President Musharraf stripped of the legal and constitutional protection he secured for himself through constitutional amendments. Worse still, the PPPP will not even be able to form a government in Sindh, where it is the largest party in the assembly, even with the help of the MMA. MQM, the second largest group, will definitely go with the Grand National Alliance (GNA) in Sindh if it joins the alliance at the centre. Sources said Asif Zardari’s transfer to a Karachi hospital was a ‘favour’ to his party, and an indication that the government does not want to keep a rigid stance on the PPPP.

If the government relaxes the bar on floor crossing, sources said, the MMA could withdraw its nominee for the prime minister’s office, Maulana Fazlur Rehman. They say if the bar goes, there will be no stopping the PML-QA — not only will many members from the PML-N switch sides but defections from the MMA itself could not be ruled out.
