It's really two pronged. Blagnovetich promised an unneeded expansion of O'Hare airport which will bring billions in $ and jobs to Chicago. Even those who don't agree with him won't buck the money.

The other prong is the Capone link. Most of the little people did well when Capone was the top gangster. It was during the depression and if a teamster had to kick back a little, he still had a job. Now here's something I bet you didn't know.

The Brick Tavern in the river town of Bath, Illinois had a vault for mob money during the depression. The mob from Chicago would spend weekends hunting and buying ducks and gambling etc. Most of them would blow a large on a weekend. They were well liked. They sent so many ducks to Chicago a rail spur was built. The ducks were given to the people living in cold water flats where Capone operated. These people lived without meat most of the year and having a duck or two for Thanksgiving and Christmas meant enough they kept quiet.
