Most income over 100k has a significnat non- salary component - investment gains & incomes, roylaties, real estate deals, etc. There are about 3+ millon millionaires in the US, about 1% of the popultaion... Way less than 1 % make 250 k - But a whole bunch of people make 140-200k. Two working professionals in an urban area + some investment income or a consulting job will get you there. The income distribution is not gaussian or even log normal -it's lumpy.
