When not wondering how thick the empty beer bottle layer at the bottom of the solent is, it is great fun to start a bit of flag dipping at the larger ships.

Custom is that any British ship dipping its flag at another British ship should be replied to in kind. So some poor hand has to run out, up a ladder, along a platform, down a ladder, get the flag, up the ladder, along another platform, down a ladder, dip the flag and back.

Of course, some other sailors spot you start this game so once the appropriate reply has been performed, they dip their flag at the larger vessel and the game can go on for hours. It all helps to keep deck hands in jobs...
