"The default Linksys password is admin"

right you are

here's what got me thinking about the subject of router firmware upgrades in the first place...

the linksys support site has this to say about firmware upgrades:

"Note - Firmware upgrades are for the resolution of any problems you may be encountering with the router and not for additional features. Installing newer firmware on a presently-functioning router may result in router malfunction. Please be aware of this when downloading firmware."

kb.linksys.com{1A}&softpage=IKW_ENU_JDocView

so it was dredging up that old adage about if it ain't broke, don't fix it. problem is, if there is a security hole, most folks would have no idea their router was "broke", and wouldn't be inclined to fix it. so i wanted to look into the security aspect, and the response i posted from linksys addresses it quite well.

there's another very similar issue, but with the linksys BEFSX41 (not the BEFSR41 that the previous bulletin deals with)... covered quite well in a recent pcmag article on software and hardware firewalls.

pcmag.com

an item of note in the article.... "Linksys issued a firmware fix (1.43.3) in response to our testing; those who already own this firewall should download the fix immediately."

:)
