wrt amazon though, one deceptive thing about both Dell and Amazon is that they have a "virtual" set of staff at fedex and the shippers that they partner with, using the hub and spoke model (I'm sure amzn does this- Dell does).

Don't be so sure. Not long ago Bezos was proudly crowing about "injection-shipping" something he should have looked into as soon as his sales surpassed $50 million year, many years back.

Let's not forget that Bezos is not a retailer. His never mastered that feeling. Amazon's headquarters are perched a top of hill in Seattle. They should have been next to the warehouse in some extra-cheap industrial land (just like walmart's).
