When I type XCOPY /? I get a help screen. Make sure there's a space between the XCOPY and the /?.

XCOPY supports Windows long file names, but you must enclose them in double quotes.

Example XCOPY "A really long name.TXT" F:
This command will preserve the long file name. If you use DOS's DIR, it will have an MS-DOS name of AREALL~1.TXT, but when you check the right side of the listing, you'll see the Windows long file name. Explorer will show the Windows name too.

You can give full path names for both source and destination.

XCOPY "C:Windows\Stolen copyright material\*.*" "D:\Stash\"

On my screen, it appears that you've been leaving out required space characters in the commands you've entered.
