I wish your friend a good recovery. There was a Palestinian who lives a couple miles from me that was arrested after 9/11/01. He'd recently had words with a car rental clerk and she said he'd said some things in anger that were sort of predictive of something happening soon. (Along the lines of - don't mess with me. don't you know I'm an Arab? If you don't know what that means watch your TV.) He also boasted of being a pilot. Turned out not to be a pilot but had taken some flying lessons. When they searched his place they found a gun which he shouldn't have been in possession of given his immigrant status. He'll probably be deported over that.
