The "idea" of a "christ" or "messiah" is not Christian or even Hebrew in origin. But far older, and the world is much greater than the confines of the collection of pebbles around the small insignificant sea called Gallilea. Certainly all these figures of history have all helped to form and spark mankind's imagination and gifts to appreciate and understand their/our own existences . One cannot run blindly around ignoring the lives that transformed entire cultures and continents and caused men to reflect more in their lives with hopefully more humility and compassion , and we must study and respect all these sources. I do not condemn Jesus at all , rather point out he was not the first to discover or plummet into the depths of the human condition. A great story for those that want to believe , and whatever gets them hugging and kissing I always say , but am not going to be hanging eternal damnation over your head if you choose not to believe . Jesus was a bit of a hothead at times , and hard to imagine "God" being so impatient with his creation as often Jesus described in his diatribes . There certainly was alot of "cursing" going on .<G>Revelations 2:23 For Jezebel: And I will kill her children with death; and all the churches shall know that I am he which searcheth the reins and hearts: and I will give unto every one of you according to your works. Luke 19:27 But those mine enemies, which would not that I should reign over them, bring hither, and slay them before me. "Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of Hell." "Whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost it shall not be forgiven him neither in this world nor in the world to come." "Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire." "The Son of Man shall send forth his His angels, and they shall gather out of His kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity, and shall cast them into a furnace of fire; there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth"; 34 Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword. 35 For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law. "And these shall go away into everlasting fire." Then He says again, "If thy hand offend thee, cut it off; it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into Hell, into the fire that shall never be quenched, where the worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched." But I can certainly understand where Jesus was coming from , I was/am still young and very idealistic to ! (And there sure are alot of vipers out there to avoid ) ;-)
